"I'm not going to talk to you about that."

I love our pediatrician. When I asked about the spot on Nils' cheek at his four month well visit today (if you calibrate your screen just so, you may be able to see it), Dr Bacchus' reply was "I'm not going to talk to you about that."

This and "you're not allowed to worry about that" are favorites of Dr. Bacchus. He is very patient with my long list of questions and thoughtfully answers most of them, but occasionally he uses one of these favorite phrases. He generally follows up with the reason he's not going to answer my question and truly doesn't answer it. I can appreciate that since I can only imagine what kind of benign tumor is laying beneath my son's cheek. As far as I'm concerned, ignorance is bliss as long it's pediatrician approved.

Other things I'm not allowed to worry about: how many ounces he should be gaining a day, how much aluminum is in the DTaP vaccine and the color of his belly button (pictures to follow).

Other highlights of today's visit include his growth percentiles:

13 lb 13.5 oz (25%). . . . down from 54% last visit. . . . not allowed to worry about it
25 inches long (50%). . . .up from 27%. . . . .yeah!
41.9 cm head circumference (37%) . . . .small brain? . . . .not allowed to worry about it

And his vaccines:

Rotavirus (prevents an intestinal virus that causes vomitting and diarrhea) and DTaP (contains enough aluminum to make a six pack of cola.)

  2. ohh.. you have dr. bacchus... we like him! but we love our regular pediatrician: dr. pelly fan. she gives me and toni darn straight answers and follows up with it - even with night calls as late as 10pm!! we were pretty impressed.
but if dr. fan's not around, we'll take dr. bacchus anytime. so far our experience(s) with him were pretty good. there was one time that he was not sure of how to handle jacob's condition, he called in dr. fan from her appointment to give second opinion. however, he did not give the "not allowed to worry about it" answer. lol.

we are pretty "regular" patients of kaiser peds in oakland due to our children's asthma and allergy. we must say that we are truly happy with the team of pediatricians there.

do you guys know that dr. andy wen also practiced in that building? he has helped us, too, with jacob's on going asthma/allergy condition. great team of dr's there!

if dr. bacchus is not around, ask for dr. pelly fan.

    that's our (long) comments.

  4. thanks for all of the updates - I love your honesty (I was just as neurotic - a couple of visits to the emergency and a few years under my belt, and I got better. :)
meanwhile, very jealous about the rotavirus vaccine. we all got it and definitely not one you want to get! that was a really rough week.

lots of love, Nils is adorable!! Can't wait to see you guys soon.
